Investors panic over Google's AI game generator, tank gaming stocks
Boing Boing: A couple years ago, it was my distinct displeasure to inform you about the advent of Sora AI-generated video just before the resulting tidal wave of slop rendered truth a luxury. It's my even more distinct displeasure to inform you that we could be standing at the edge of a similar precipice — at least, according to a few investors.

Well I understand why there is significant investor panic over Google's AI game generator, I have a feeling we are still a long long way away from getting to a point where AI can actually make good games. I think a big thing about video games, especially more Indie video games, is that they have so much thought and meaning put into them. Every frame has meaning and adds to the overall storyline and that's just not something AI is able to do right now. As for larger companies I could see how they would want to implement using AI for certain parts of the game making process if only because they would prefer it over having to pay employees, however right now I don't see that happening just because of where the technology is at. I also wonder if the cost of using these AI programs would actually outweigh the cost of just making the game themselves because of the amount of computing power actually needed,
It is crazy to see AI creating video games, even if they are terrible and incoherent. Many laughed years ago at AI’s attempts at imitations of politicians and celebrities, but now many are indistinguishable.
I enjoy playing a few video games in my minutes of free time, and recently I’ve rediscovered Stardew Valley. What I’ve always loved about Stardew Valley was the graphics and the community that bonded around the game, the stories, and the video game developer, ConcernedApe. I can’t imagine any sort of community forming around AI games. Not being able to communicate with the developer, not being able to appreciate another human artist, sounds boring. And with the rise of short form content, and its connection to AI, I can’t imagine any of these games would get much long term attention.
Much of what makes games great is also the creative ideas behind them. Project Genie seems like it makes the AI user do all the creative work. And again, games are collaborative. AI is not.
