AI has in recent years become an important topic in education. I remember when ChatGPT first became popular and caused controversy within schools a year or so ago. Even though I can see the practical uses for it in an educational environment, I am not personally too excited about AI in education. I don’t trust that it is being used for its intended purpose by students, especially by younger students who have yet to develop a strong enough sense of right and wrong, or by the desperate high school or college student who is rushing to finish their homework. The effect this could have on the education system should be closely monitored.

However, from an innovation point of view, I am excited about CMU’s part in developing AI and contributing to the future. AI is incredibly useful in other fields, including advancements in medical technology and other publicly beneficial applications. There are pros and cons to AI usage depending on the situation, and I hope that this is something that is taken seriously in the future.
