Kate Winslet Says Intimacy Coordinator Benefits Sex Scenes

variety.com: Kate Winslet championed intimacy coordinators in a recent interview with The New York Times. The Oscar winner said having an intimacy coordinator on set would’ve benefitted her every time she was required to perform a sexual situation on camera, be it more graphic scenes featuring full frontal nudity or far tamer scenes with just kissing.

From my understanding, intimacy coordinators should always be a part of every intimate scene on stage or on camera. I had not realized that intimacy coordinators are not standard in Hollywood or least have not been for a really long time. I think that it's quite unfortunate that so many actors and actresses, like Kate Winslet, were not really taught the proper ways in which to work on intimate scenes. These performers were not helped to feel comfortable and empowered in their own position. I’m glad that Winslet is speaking out and sharing her experience without an intimacy coordinator to maybe help encourage Hollywood to make intimacy coordinators be more of a standard on set. I had no idea that there were even people in Hollywood acting against intimacy coordinators and stating that they ruin intimate scenes. That’s awful that someone would completely misinterpret the job of an intimacy coordinator in such a way. Intimacy coordinators are only there to help and make the performers feel more comfortable in this vulnerable situation. In no way are they trying to make the scene seem more unrealistic.

I am honestly so surprised when I see articles like this because I think I am just exposed to these professions and I think that it is an industry standard but when I come across articles like these I always have to take a step back because it obviously is not an industry standard. This honestly should not even be doubted because it is so important that everyone in these scenes are comfortable and it is not just improved because of how many possible boundaries might appear in these situations. I think that it is important that people that are actually using the intimacy coordinators to talk about their experiences with them, especially if they have been positive and especially if they make the scenes and the situations the people are put in more comfortable and better for not jus the experience but the product as well.
