Broadway’s ‘Merrily We Roll Along’ partners with justice advocacy organization Harriet Tubman Effect
www.broadwaynews.com: The Broadway revival of “Merrily We Roll Along” has partnered with the Harriet Tubman Effect (HTE), a human resource center and social justice advocacy organization, for an accessible ticketing initiative. Part of the organization’s work to dismantle systemic oppression, HTE’s Lantern Tix initiative makes a Broadway experience possible for families and individuals in communities who normally would not have access.

This ticketing effort is super exciting to me. While to a certain extent, Broadway must be commercial, art should not be limited to the elite. The one part of this article that particularly enticed me was how they are limiting the urgency of these discount tickets being secured. While not traditionally noticed, ticket demand and urgency are an accessibility factor in theatre. Those who don’t work computer jobs can’t log in at specific times, join queues, etc. Sending out the discounted ticket code to those who specifically qualify for it both limits the element of urgency and ensures those who specifically need these tickets to see live performances can do so. Another aspect of this that is important is patron autonomy. One thing I learned through working with local nonprofits is that there must be flexibility in community outreach for it to be truly successful. It seems as though HTE and Merrily have taken this all into consideration and have a successful endeavor towards accessibility.
