The Sphere represents the "iPhone-ification" of tour design says Es Devlin

www.dezeen.com: The Las Vegas Sphere could set a new standard for tour design much like the iPhone did for mobile phones, set designer Es Devlin tells Dezeen in this interview. Devlin started her career in London's theatre scene of the 1990s before going on to conceive some of the most recognisable sets in the history of modern touring – from Kanye West's floating stages to a giant augmented-reality version of Bono.

This article is about the sphere in Las Vegas, and how some tour designers are worried it will set a trend for the industry. I do not think it will set a trend for the industry, and I think it’s just a huge novelty for a couple of artists. Set designer Es Devlin believes the sphere represents the “Iphone-ificiation” of theater venues, and that we need to have more intimacy in our performance spaces. I agree with this to the extent that intimacy is important, but I disagree with the premise that it can't be achieved in the sphere. I also disagree with her idea that it will become extremely popular, as the price is just too prohibitive for most cities around the world, not to mention the logistical nightmare of building and maintaining it. You need a city exactly like Las Vegas in order to be able to maintain such a structure. I do agree that sets for concerts are becoming increasingly similar, but I feel like that's just a trend that will come to pass, not a signifier of a lasting change.
