Five Ways to Maximize Your Theatre’s Social Media Presence

HowlRound Theatre Commons: As a content creator and a social media manager for theatre companies, I have experienced firsthand how social media can be a radical site for theatre companies to engage with audiences. While ticket prices continue to skyrocket and theatre companies struggle to fill seats, social media—especially video content—can reach thousands of viewers.

These are all super helpful tips for theaters and are not things that I have thought about too much before, but I have nonetheless definitely experienced them. There was a show going on in London that I saw a well-made TikTok video about a few weeks before I traveled there, and the video inspired me to buy tickets for it, and it ended up being one of the coolest shows I had seen. I'm not normally the biggest fan of social media, but I think spreading information for theater is a great use for it. The tips the author of this article gave were very helpful. I don't necessarily see myself working in a social media position, but these are nevertheless very important tips that can help people seeking these positions as well as seeking to grow the reach of their theaters. I especially liked the discussion of having proper framing, lighting, and sound. I have seen many videos that do not take these things into consideration, and the difference clearly shows in the quality of the final product.

This was actually super interesting and helpful to read. I think in this post-covid era, more people are inclined to sit on their couch and watch a movie or a television show rather than go see a live theatre performance. This is why marketing is so important. As the marketing mediums change it is imperative that theatres keep up with social media marketing strategies to increase their audience. I really appreciated how the author of the article mentioned how important it is to cater to the different types of social media and how each one has a completely different consumer base. I think that a lot of times theatres will get stuck in creating one type of content to try and mix all of the different demographics together, thus resulting in the content not being a hit anywhere. I could see myself potentially doing a job similar to this so this article was wonderful in how it was catered to theatre specifically.

This article is extremely insightful in the world we live in today where everyone has a phone and is basically their third hand. Appealing to audiences that are very quick to judge is also extremely important but difficult and this article shares light onto what people can do to make sure people are interested in what the theater is about. The tips in the article are extremely helpful but I already knew most of them because my old theater just started using social media and I saw them doing most of the tricks and continue to see them on my feed weekly. One of the helpful tips is to stay consistent with posting but also posting things that are very well known so people are more intrigued and I can tell that it is extremely helpful when those two factors are used in social media.

As someone who’s watched really small theatre companies bring in lots of people with social media and larger productions having to close early because people didn’t know it existed i know firsthand how impactful social media can be in the success of a production. Every post that gets a good number of views is essentially free advertising and if you’re getting those views regularly that’s unbelievably strong. This article is really important because it sheds light on the specific strategies used to attain this social media presence. It’s definitely an article I’ll be linking to companies going forward when they are struggling with their marketing. The insight that the algorithm targeting the videos to your target demographic which are more likely to come see your show anyway is a really important insight because it’s just one of many reasons why social media is just that important for theatre companies to use.

I have always lived in a world where social media is everywhere and an integral aspect of how we live our lives. Even my high school theatre (run by a young millennial) has a fantastic Instagram page. Understanding how intertwined our society is with social media can help you harness its power for good. Maximizing a theatre's social media presence is crucial for reaching and engaging with an audience. This article has some great tips. I enjoyed the call to share behind-the-scenes content, rehearsal footage, and sneak peeks. Companies shouldn’t be afraid of spoilers, rather it can be used to build anticipation. Something I feel like a lot of companies do is sacrifice the quality of what they’re posting. But by using high-quality images and videos a company is able to showcase the production quality even as someone is doom scrolling through. Consistency is key, and a well-executed social media strategy can significantly boost a theatre's visibility and audience engagement, especially in a world that continues to be online.

As much as I don’t like it, social media controls a lot of things. It has the power to spread information (false and true), influence people and boost products. With any entertainment almost half of it is smart, strategic marketing. Social media is the new place for this. Most people are much more inclined to simply watch a TV show or movie in their comfortable homes, even going to a movie theater may seem like a journey to some, so going to the theater may be completely out of the question. These tips are super crucial for the future of theatrical performance. People have to be exposed to a lot of advertising to step out a see a show now, which is a bit sad– especially as someone who wants to go into this dying industry. It is just pretty insane to me how people have careers around something that most aren’t even interested in. But I don’t know how I feel about advertising for something so humane being boosted on social media.

I hate that social media is so important in our world today. I get frustrated trying to keep up and figure out what, when, how, who, I should be posting. However, I did find this article helpful. I spent a couple of years in high school working for a local children's theater and despite not enjoying it I was put in charge of running their social media. I was the only teenager working for this company so they automatically assumed I had the most knowledge. Boy were they wrong and oh man I could have used this article back then. Of course I learned and adapted but I still would not say I enjoyed it. But now I know all of these tips are true. Consistent posts and information keeps you relevant, trendy videos gain attention and so on. I think even those like me that do not enjoy social media must learn it when going into the entertainment industry because despite how I wish it was, it is so important.

This was a very interesting article. I have run social media before for my local theatre back home and it was not easy. These very helpful tips make a lot of sense and I will definitely be using them in the future. I found it really interesting about the 5 pillars that it talked about in the article. While, in the back of my head, I knew that there should be some consistency and system for how to choose when to post what type of content, but I never was completely sure what that was, so learning about the 5 pillars makes a lot of sense and is very helpful. It was also interesting to learn about how to decide what content goes where, because that was something that I struggled with was deciding what would make the largest impact of Instagram vs Facebook ect. However, that actually made a lot of sense and I will be using that information in the future.
