A musical parody of 'Saw' teases out the queer love story from a cult horror hit

NPR: The Saw movies can be divisive. The gruesome, almost 20-year-old horror franchise about a villain named Jigsaw who traps his victims in life-or-death games came out with its latest movie in September. But that is not the only addition to the Saw universe. There is now an off-Broadway parody musical that has plenty of gore and sex — and also manages to be camp.

This is pretty interesting. I don't usually like re-makes of things, especially if they are super iconic or great originally. But this sounds pretty unique- turning Saw a gory horror movie into a musical? Sounds bizarre, but maybe would work. This made me think of the new The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes movie, although not the same case at all it still has to do with the continuation of a legacy. It was a flop in my opinion, and like most sequels or prequels should not have been made. It tried to modernize the types of characters they used which never was a thing in the older movies. What I do appreciate about this parody remake is how innovative it is. I like it when shows are kind of flipped on their heads and see what changes about the themes or messages presented. I designed an adaptation of Boeing Boeing where the genders were switched. It was partially for plot purposes but also was very curious about how it would affect the play running overall.

I was super interested to see this article up on the news site. I'm not the biggest fan of horror movies however I do have to say, I've watched the Saw series and it was pretty good. I honestly have no idea why I watch them, but it happened and I'm not mad about it. When I first started reading this article I was thinking in my head, who's gay and Saw? When I thought about it I knew that there wasn't anybody to be outwardly gay in the Saw, and so I was confused. It makes a lot of sense what they did with this musical, and I remember this one scene so distinctly. I think it's hilarious that they based a whole musical off of it, and the author of the article is right about the whole Community wanting this for the longest time. I would love to see this production at some point!

The jigsaw franchise is SO SO SO ICONIC. ugh, it is SUCH a good horror movie series and has had such an impact on the horror franchise as a whole. Now, this production on the other hand, is reminding me a LOT of the Stranger Sings Musical that went off Broadway in new york for a few months last year (or the run still might be happening i have no clue). It feels like they took a movie that was good, and put it on stage for the sake of making more theatre, when there are SO MANY good horror story plays and musicals out there by writers who are trying to get their name out there into the world. I don't know, I mean I definitely (probably) would end up watching and enjoying this production, but it would also scratch my brain the same way Stranger Sings did. And
I understand that this production is a parody of the jigsaw franchise, but to me, its still not enough to be considered 1000% original.
