Mayor of London Rejects Plans for MSG Sphere in East London
www.ticketnews.com: Since the MSG Sphere graced the Sin City, there have been talks about bringing the iconic venue across the globe. However, The Guardian reports the mayor of London Sadiq Khan directed the London Legacy Development Corporation to refuse a planning application for MSG Sphere London, noting that it would have caused “unacceptable harm to hundreds of residents,” with various concerns about the venue’s height and appearance in the city.

I think the call by London mayor Sadiq Khan to prohibit the MSG Sphere to be built in London was very good. The sphere makes sense in Las Vegas, where everything is meant to be a spectacle and over-the-top. But in such a historic city I agree that it would not only be ugly but cause harm to residents. As much as a world-class venue would help London, I think it would just make London look like a sell-out city. I can’t even imagine if that sphere was built and your apartment is across the street, meaning all night you see a bright glow through your curtains. The environmental impact would also be so large, with the amount of energy used and what it might do to local wildlife. I would be so disappointed to go to London only to find this large, ugly, LED sphere sat in the middle of lovely city, ruining all images I have of the place.
I am honestly pretty happy that London did not decide to construct a Sphere over there. It would have really ruined the vibe and visual picture of the London landscape. A lot of the things mentioned as reasons for not constructing the London sphere are things that I feel like probably still are issues in Vegas. Everything with the sheer amount of light pollution being in resident sightlines, the sheer amount of resources it requires, the lack of sustainability…these are all issues that I don’t think are exclusive to London. I feel as though, with everything I have seen about the sphere, I haven’t seen a lot discussing the (what I consider to be somewhat obvious immediate red flags) effect that an installation like this has. I thought it was interesting that a spokesperson for MSG implied that London wasn’t a forward-thinking city for not wanting to install a giant neon lightbox in the skyline that would shine into people’s homes.
