Motorised mice and hideous death masks: bringing The Witches to life on stage

Theatre | The Guardian: Across the hidden hallways, humming workshops and bustling backstage spaces at the National Theatre, preparation is well under way for a musical version of Roald Dahl’s The Witches. Everyone is busy. Very busy. The wham (wigs, hair and makeup) team are working at full capacity on more than 50 wigs, including a fair few that emit smoke on cue.

I really enjoyed reading this article! I never read “The Witches” when I was young, however, I am familiar with other works by Roald Dahl and I really liked them as a kid! I have only seen one show at the National Theatre, which was Pheadra back in March of 2023, but it was one of the most amazing pieces of theatre I have seen. I was completely enthralled in the storyline and a world of the play and I absolutely did not want the production to end. It was also the most insane set I have ever seen. I’m sure that this production of “The Witches” will be up to the same caliber, which is super exciting! It was so cool to read about all of the costumes, hair, and makeup. The fact that they are creating wigs with the ability to emit smoke which is so crazy and something I never would have even thought to try.

I LOVE The Witches by Roald Dahl and I am so excited that it's being brought to life on the stage. Particularly at the National Theatre, one of my favorite theatres for new work. It is crazy the amount of costumes being made for that show and it's remarkable how it's the highest workload in ten years. I am curious to know the last show ten years ago that had a higher amount of costumes. I love the look of the grand high witch. I love how structured and playful the silhouette is, I particularly love the shoulder pads. I also love the color palette and how all of the patterns play with each other. In one of the photos you can see a design of a person cupcake and it has a similar palette with all different tones of red just like the purple high-witch costume. I sincerely hope they release this on the National Theatre website so I can watch it because it looks absolutely fantastic.
