Suzanne Tick Is Reshaping Textiles

Architect Magazine: Textiles are ubiquitous in the designed environment, and demand for new fabrics continues to grow. The global textile market is estimated to be worth more than $1.6 trillion and is predicted to increase 7.6% annually until 2030. Unfortunately, this growth has resulted in burgeoning material waste streams. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, more than 17 million tons—or 112 pounds per person—of textiles are disposed of yearly. Fewer than 20% of fabrics are collected at the end of their useful lives for reuse or recycling.

This was a very interesting article to read. I’ve definitely heard a lot of “fun” facts over the years about the waste produced by the textile and clothing manufacturing industries, and the article also shared some information discussing all of that waste and environmental clutter produced. We definitely live in a time where it is super important to be thinking about what we’re doing to limit the amount of trash created. I think that these new textiles are a really great way to reuse old stuff in a cool new way, and I also think it’s great that the designer is working with a smaller-scale textile mill to also support that smaller business. And as an added bonus, the fabric patterns and textiles being created are super cool looking. I loved all of the ones shown in photos in the article, and I was particularly big fan of the chair.
