After Months On The Market, 'The Brady Bunch' House Sells For $3.2 Million

LAist: Here's a story of a lovely house that recently sold for a loss. The home, better known as "The Brady Bunch house," in Studio City went on the market in May for $5.5 million and sold on Monday for just under $3.2 million to a self-described fan with no intention of living there.

It baffles me what people are willing to spend money on, and just how much they will spend to get it. The house is beautiful and interesting, and the history associated with it is neat, but to buy a house that will be used for “charity and fundraising events” feels wasteful. And the fact that the buyer herself called the house a “liability.” Buying actual homes just to collect them is simply frivolous. But this story proves how much of an impact television, movies, and all forms of entertainment can have on individuals. This home would have been worth a lot less if it weren’t for the Brady name attached to it. HGTV buying the house for a show to renovate it to what the inside of the Brady Bunch house looked like of course increased the value, making it seem like a money pit. Once renovated, what was the plan? Simply to sell? I have no conclusion, simply bafflement.

I found the article to be enlightening, it is amazing to see what people spend money on just because they have it. Tina Trahan bought the house hgtv remodel meticulously to look like the exterior and interior of the house from the famous sitcom. However, she has no intention of using the house except for the occasional party. While she came in significantly under the asking price of $5.5 million dollars she still dropped a cool $3.2 million dollars on the house. That is a lot to spend to just have something. Apparently, real estate seems to be a bit of a collector's item to her so this is just another house to add to her collection. However it fascinates me that anyone would want it. Yes, it is cool to have a house from a favorite tv show but if you are not going to use it, then why spend the money. That money could do good elsewhere. It just amazes me.

As much as this is certainly a very frivolous purchase, people have definitely spent far more on far less. At least this frivolous purchase came with a 5,500 square foot house in LA. If this had been closer to the time of the show the buyer likely would have recouped their money through visits and tours of the Brady house with no problem. At which point when it became something that people didn’t want to visit anymore then in the end it’s still a house in LA with houses for sale near it around the same size selling for up to $4,999,000. As much as the person who bought it considers it entirely a liability it at the very least can recoup some of the money simply due to its size if they just install some actual appliances instead of the fake ones that HGTV put in place.
