What is the Edinburgh Fringe and Why Is It So Big?
Playbill: The arts festival is absolutely massive; in 2022, more than 3,300 different shows from 63 countries sold over 2.2 million tickets to 50,000 performances. Those numbers make it one of the most popular ticketed events in the world, with only the biannual Olympics competitions and quadrennial World Cup tournament garnering a larger response.

Before I came to Carnegie Mellon I had no idea that the Edinburgh fringe existed or how big it had come. I think the most exposure I had in the past to the festival was knowing the SIX was developed partly at a college in scotland. After learning about what fringe is and its history I am so excited that artists have a place to simply create without imitation and for the audience to be inspired. I also was shocked to find out just how old the Edinburgh Fringe was as I thought it would have started way layered then it actually did. I also found it fascinating that the Fringe festival came out of the tragedy that was world war 2. Though I have not been to or been a part of Edinburgh fringe I have seen and been a part of the St.Louis and DC equivalents the Edinburgh Fringe inspired.
