The House Where Phantom Lived—Part I: The Majestic Theatre, New York

The Theatre Times: It is known that the construction of the Grand Opera or the Palais Garnier in Paris inspired Gaston Leroux to write his famous novel “The Phantom of the Opera.” The building, which took over fifteen years to build (architect: Charles Garnier), became not only one of the biggest opera houses in the world, but also a structure filled with various unexpected technical solutions.

It’s true, I’m sad that Phantom’s closing. Patti said it should just die, and I get that, but I really do have a soft spot for it. I loved hearing about Kantor playing the different managers. To be so real, I actually think the managers might be my favorite characters in the show. “Prima Donna” and “Letters” are CRIMINALLY underrated to me. As far as the theater goes, the Majestic is certifiably stunning. I’m so curious to see what the technologically updated version will be like, and how much the original feel of the theater itself will be affected. I really do wonder what it will feel like—for both the company and the audience—for the show that moves into the Majestic next. But guys, I swear, I feel like they’re just going to move and downsize. Remember that Instagram post where the Phantom said “I have developed a particular fondness for New York City,” and something like “be vigilant, I won’t be far away,”???
