It is so interesting to me how the show Rust will begin resuming production soon, even though there are still lawsuits being filed for the wrongful death of Halyna Hutchin’s. What is most surprising to me is that these people are asking for money as compensation, and no one is actually talking about how to fix this reoccurring issue. The use of weapons in movies and theatre is very dangerous and the fact that there has been more than one death because of accidental uses of the weapon should be more of a concern than it is. As theatrical performers and technicians, there is a high health standard that we hold ourselves to, and so it’s surprising when the places we work for don’t do the same. I hope that this lawsuit gets resolved, and all parties feel better. But at the same time I hope this sparks the conversation to create change in the film and theatre industry for weapon safety and the use of weapons in general.
