Hearing about shows that are going on around me is always so fun. Seeing that CMU alum are being cast in roles at big theatre in Pittsburgh is great to see because it makes me remember why I’m here. Even though I am often very stressed and overwhelmed because of the program, I’m doing it so I will have a well rounded set of skills and I can have a healthy career in entertainment. I might just have to go see the upcoming production of Steel Magnolias at Downtown’s O’Reilly Theater. We produced that show at my high school. Well, we were going to, but Covid shut us down right as we were about to open. We ended up producing the show on zoom, but I would really love to see a full scale production because it’s such an amazing and emotional show. With as little time as I have, I need to go see more productions if I’m going to be working in this field.
I originally saw the cast list for Native Gardens on social media a few days ago. I knew nothing about this show, so I decided to look it up. The first thing I saw was that it tells a Latinx story, and that was enough to get me interested. It sounds like a very interesting story that can be very insightful. The cast sounds great and there is even a Carnegie Mellon University alumnus in the show. It also just so happens that opening night is during spring break, so I plan on getting a ticket to see it then before school work doesn’t allow me any free time to see it. I’ll also be supporting a female playwright, which is exciting! This is the first show from City Theatre that I will be seeing, and I can’t wait to see more shows from them for the next four years. City Theatre often seems to tell a lot of Latinx stories so that’s very cool.
It is really nice to hear about shows that are happening locally, especially with alumni from Carnegie Mellon. I have yet to see a play in Pittsburgh outside of CMU, so I will hopefully find time to go see one or both of the mentioned shows in the next couple months. I wish that Carnegie Mellon as an institution would do more in encouraging students to get off campus and explore the city; instead these things happen on a departmental level if at all. Being engaged in the city should be an important part of our college experience, yet much of this school seems dedicated to schoolwork and only schoolwork. I often don't make time or plans for myself, but hopefully I will find time and remember to drag a friend or two to see one of these shows.
I am so excited to see the cast announced for Steel Magnolias. It is a film quite dear to me. The concept of a woman’s right to choose to carry or not carry and its intersection with the fetus, family, and society. I hope to be able to see the show since I would love to see a staged version of this piece. Especially the iconic scene where the news news is delivered. I wonder how it would be staged to show the salon and other parts of the story. I also wonder how the staging would affect the homely feeling of this piece and how to small town feeling may be affected by the technical elements and design elements to be added to the production. I am also interested in seeing how the city theater tackles this subject and puts their own little spin on it. CIty Theatre tends to be known for its recognized exploration of the othered.
