I clicked on this article because I am obsessed with movies and TV. I was very excited to see The Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild held their awards this year. I love hair and makeup so much and it's one of my favorite categories for the academy awards. This is a really great idea to have awards directly dedicated to Hair and Makeup. It is such an element that is so under appreciated at times I feel like. To have an own awards show highlighting just that element I feel like is really important to highlight those artists. I really especially agreed with Everything Everywhere All at Once getting Contemporary Makeup, the makeup for this movie really brought a fun and fantasy aspect. I also thought Pam and Tommy winning for both makeup and special effects was very well deserved given that is one of the things that made the show what it was.

I am a costume designer, but hair and makeup is also a huge interest in mine. I started out as a cosplayer around 2017, and I gained a lot of experience working with wigs and makeup. Through high school, I started using these skills in theatre, and A few of the wigs I made ended up on my portfolio. Hair and makeup is a field that I feel is often overlooked, despite the incredible artistry. I’m not at all surprised that Everything Everywhere All at Once and Euphoria won best contemporary makeup. The creative directors of Euphoria had such a specific vision for the atmosphere of the show and the makeup artists captured that perfectly with lots of glitter, gloss, and ethereal colors. On the other hand, the aesthetic of Everything Everywhere All at Once was all over the place, and the makeup artists really got to flex their creative muscles.

Although I’m not planning on going into costume design myself, I still really appreciate the artistry that goes into makeup and hairstylists for stage. In fact, makeup art is really what got me into design and production work. When I was in 6th grade, I was in a play called The Mouse That Roared, and absolutely hated it. Then, when I was in seventh grade, I decided to audition for the Attack of the Pom-Pom Zombies for some reason, and ended up dropping the play about two weeks into rehearsal. I still wanted to be involved in the production though, so I asked if there was any other type of help they needed for the show. Luckily, they needed someone to paint 30 middle schoolers green during the intermission, and I ended up feeling really fulfilled with the work that I had done. From there, I began working on sound for productions, and went into lighting design from there. Although I will probably not concentrate in costuming, I still really love the work that goes into it.
