The minds behind 'Frozen,' 'Lion King' on their staying power

Los Angeles Times: Jennifer Lee and Irene Mecchi are part of an extremely rarefied club. They were integral to the success of Walt Disney Animation Studios’ three top-grossing films of all time: “Frozen,” “Frozen II” and “The Lion King,” which have cumulatively earned more than $3.8 billion globally.

The fact that I haven't really heard either of these women’s names before (perhaps only within a documentary) only proves how important articles like this are. As the article says, it is incredibly impressive for them to have helped write both the screenplays and the librettos, being part of two industries that are notoriously difficult for women. A super interesting thing within the article was a quote from Lee, describing an early draft of Frozen, explaining that Anna was “persnickety” and demanding—completely polar from the resulting character. Also, the fact that Lion King was intended to be the “smaller” movie. Not only is the film a masterpiece in many respects, but the stage production was groundbreaking, and still going strong. I am extremely happy to hear that all of these endeavors were headed by talented women. I feel like it doesn’t shock me AS much that women had the opportunity at Disney to do this as opposed to other companies. I only say this because of the creative people I imagine working there, not necessarily the cruel monopoly itself.
