The Wonderfully Wicked Costumes of 'Wednesday' with Colleen Atwood
The Art of Costume: Academy award-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood and director Tim Burton have been staples of my life for as long as I can remember. It all started with a film called Mars Attacks! and continued on with the somber world of Edward Scissorhands, through the vibrancy of Alice in Worderland.

I really do love the work of Colleen Atwood. Her designs from Wednesday really did elevate what a Netflix series could do with Fantasy. Colleen Atwood has done works like Edward Scissorhands and Alice in wonderland as talked about in the article. Her vibrancy from Alice in Wonderland, I feel like really showed through Wednesday, but still had that Edward Scissorhands darkness. One thing they talked about was the helmets that uncle fester wore and I feel like those were really smart elements to add in to add a layer of texture and depth to the costumes. Another thing that was probably my favorite of the Wednesday costume design was how the inspiration of Alfred Hitchcock’s the birds for Gwendolyn’s character I feel was very smart. I love how Colleen Atwood takes things from pop culture and adds them into her art. Wednesday pulls from so many different pop culture elements like said in the article.

Sorry forgot to put my name the first time
I absolutely loved the costumes in this show. This show was also one of the few examples of tv shows, let alone a Netflix original, receive so much public praise on social media platforms for the costumes within the show. I feel like in general shows do not get that much buzz for the costumes specifically, it is great to see this so recognized. I enjoyed seeing the cotemporary fashion that was integrated into this series – I’m sure it was not an easy task to blend this family and modern day fashion and styles while staying true to the characters and their modifications. Another aspect that I enjoyed was seeing how the designers altered the Nevermore uniforms to add personality to each character. I’m really excited to see season two and to see what the production elements are like in that season, especially after season one has been such a hit on many levels.
Colleen Atwood is my favourite costume designer of all time. My dream of becoming a costume designer started with her. Tim Burton is also my favourite director. Before reading this article, I actually didn’t know that Colleen Atwood was the costume designer for ‘Wednesday’, Tim Burton’s newest Netflix series. Being a fan of the 1991 film ‘The Addams Family’, I of course watched ‘Wednesday’ as soon as it came out. This interview with Atwood made me see a lot of the details I missed when watching the show. I think the biggest controversy for ‘Wednesday’ is the balance between paying homage to the film and the original comic series, as well as writing a new story that “people would have connectivity for today”. Apart from the plot itself, I definitely enjoyed the costumes for Wednesday Addams. I’m surprised that a lot of the outfits are actually purchased and then altered instead of being made. Overall, I really enjoyed the balance of vintage/retro and contemporary pieces.
From the small portions of the show that I have seen, The costumes definitely stood out to me. Honestly I really think that costumes are something that can make or break a show. There's nothing worse than being excited about a dance piece to be on stage, and seeing costumes on the rack that you absolutely hate. There's also something about feeling good and the clothes that you're wearing, especially when you're dancing in front of people that is such an amazing experience. It also goes the same way, when you hate the dance piece or something about the music, and end up absolutely loving what you're wearing. There have been so many instances where I've seen a piece of performance that I haven't really liked all too much, but liked it a lot better because I enjoyed what the performers were wearing. The power of clothing is so strong, and I think Colleen Atwood did a great job of making sure the costumes in Wednesday were amazing.
