Broadway Guilds Condemn Antisemitic ‘Parade’ Protesters

AMERICAN THEATRE: The Coalition of Broadway Unions & Guilds (COBUG), representing workers both on and offstage in New York State and beyond, has released a statement condemning the self-described neo-Nazis who harassed theatregoers prior to Tuesday’s preview performance of Parade outside the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre.

With the current “Day of Hate” being spread in news and social media posts it is disheartening to be reminded antisemitism and other hate groups of the like touch every industry including theatre. I’ve heard about the Parade protests and think it is wrong not only within the premise of the group and their agenda itself but to the people attending the show. I appreciate COBUG’s response, however I hope they actually make real steps to making Broadway and the people in and around their community a safer place. Antisemitism and racism, while having a place to be discussed and explored in content of narratives on stage as part of shows, have no place affecting the cast/crew/audience or spreading messages or committing actions that harm marginalized and historically discriminated groups. I also feel bad for the cast and crew of Parade who worked hard to put on a production about a Jewish man who was fatally imprisoned and lynched, only to be met with the neo nazi hate speech/picketing upon opening and hope they all find a way to cope with the recent hate crimes.
