ProSoundWeb: There are a number of ways to “wire the stage,” and as long as the methodology produces a reliable result, along with being both safe and efficient, then it’s all good. Over three-plus decades, I’ve developed and refined a consistent approach that my company employs, which I’ll detail here.

I had never thought of wiring a stage as something that was this complicated and intense. When I have worked on wiring in the past, it has either been for productions that are fairly small or I have been simply following instructions written down for me by someone who has already put everything together. I have never thought of how everything has to fit together, how to make everything work, and how to make sure that nothing could go wrong. I didn’t realize that there were so many ways to go about the process of wiring with so many steps and requirements. I know very little about power so I had no idea that it was necessary to physically find the breaker box and test the power each time before you plug in gear. I like how in his process, he has such attention to detail and many ways to stay as organized as possible.

It’s always interesting to read about how folks approach wiring the stage - and I really like this process. I appreciate how the author’s method doubles down on being methodical, safe, and meticulous with the wiring process - it is so essential that it is right. It is even stated that the most important step to being successful in wiring the stage is organization, and I couldn’t agree more. The time that I did not label all of my cables in a system for a musical quickly taught me the importance of doing so. If nothing else, it’s just annoying looking for the correct cable - and that system was a tiny one compared to many of the systems that are commonly used today. Checking things like power, the cabling and the digital network are all incredibly important. As someone who is looking to potentially work in sound in the future, this article was really informative and interesting.
