“Serving Lewks and Puro Class,” Tus Tías Explore the Legacy of Selena
HowlRound Theatre Commons: Even in 2023, Selena retains her staying power. To say Selena is a cultural force that extends far beyond the Latine community would be an understatement. Perhaps this strong legacy is due to the biopic Selena (1997) starring Jennifer Lopez in her breakout role or the continued presence of Selena on the small screen via vehicles like Netflix’s Selena: The Series (2020-2021).

This article shows how the art of other artist can directly inspire other people’s art. In this case the strong legacy of Selena being so strong, especially in latiné communities, that we create art directly inspired by her. I remember listening to Selena growing up. Her music was truly formative to me. Even though she had been dead for nearly a decade before I was born. Her presence felt so energetic and close you couldn’t help but feel she was still here. Her lively music was a staple on sunday cleaning days for me. I also think there is something to be said about how her story caught the attention of many. Her humble beginnings that, thanks to much hard work, ended with her as a star. A star that broke barriers for Latinés. Bringing Latiné music to mainstream like so few had been able to do before her. Or even now for that matter.
