Madison Square Garden’s Facial Recognition-Enabled Bans Now Being Targeted By Legislators, State AG

Techdirt: Late last year, it was revealed that MSG Entertainment (the owner of several New York entertainment venues, including the titular Madison Square Garden) was using its facial recognition tech to, in essence, blacklist its owner’s enemies.

I am so surprised that MSG Entertainment felt the need to create this facial recognition technology, which in hindsight takes away loyal paying customers. It was originally intended to prevent people who were performing ad discovery by snooping around under different job titles, however, instead, it has been used to blacklist the owner’s enemies, like lawyers. It would blacklist people who worked for law companies that have sued MSG in the past, and because of this person who wanted to see the Rockette's performance, anything in Madison Square Garden or a Knicks game, etc. would be rejected from entering. The government is now coming for this technology and the company states that it is often “plagued with biases and false positives”. This next technology, although made to make us feel safer, makes me feel even less safe because you are always being watched and scanned. Also, the company is relying on a computer to tell them if a person belongs to be there or not, and that thought alone bothers me.
