If It Opens, Will They Come?

WIT journal: In the last complete Broadway Season before the global COVID pandemic, Broadway was breaking attendance records with the highest numbers in its history. But the nearly 18 month shut down changed everything and the subsequent return has been slow going. Industry insiders always knew that getting back to business would be a challenge, but the pandemic’s effects on audiences are still being felt.

While we had all been hoping and praying that as things started to open back up after the pandemic, the theater industry would just bounce back easily with new shows opening and people returning en masse to the Broadway ticket booths, we can now see that this dream is simply not what’s happening. People are still not as willing to go out to shows and definitely not willing to spend large sums of money on theater tickets in the way they would before the pandemic. However, this article gives some hope for the future. As the article mentions, Broadway relies very heavily on tourists and their love of the theater. If the estimates in the article are correct, tourism is back on the rise which is a very positive thing for the future of Broadway. As tourists return to New York, I am hopeful that Broadway shows will once again have packed houses that allow shows to last for long runs.
