onstagepittsburgh.com: Spring is in the air, and not just because of the mild temperatures. High school musical theater season is underway. While many of those talented teens are in competition for awards at this time of year – the Gene Kelly Awards for Allegheny County and Henry Mancini Awards for Beaver, Butler, Lawrence and Mercer counties – when one of their own is in trouble, they quickly become a community that stretches far and wide.

This article is so exciting to me. I keep up to date on what the high schools in my hometown are up to theatre wise, especially my own high school. I enjoy knowing what they’re up to. High school theatre is different than what we do here and watching high schoolers learn about themselves through theatre is rewarding. It was also exciting to learn about what musicals recently had their rights released. I wonder how many high schools will be doing The Prom next year. Something that goes hand and hand with the spring musical season is competition season. Thousands of high schoolers are competing to be the best in their category in order to go to nationals and it can get pretty cutthroat. Theatre is an extracurricular activity that most people won’t continue to pursue after they graduate. Regardless of that, high school theatre departments have a sense of community that is unlike anything else I’ve experienced. For those that do continue on in the theatre industry, their high school theatre years are hopefully something that is looked back on with fondness. I know mine are.
