It is not surprising to see Playbill covering yet another instance of LGBTQ theater pieces being canceled in schools. With the current political climate in the United States, it is not at all surprising to me that there are more schools in more states canceling shows because of public outrage towards LGBTQ rhetoric, and it is unfortunate to say that this will not end anytime soon. Socially, when you are an outlier to the societal “normal” when it comes to human identity, there will always be some kind of verbal or legislative retaliation towards your existence; this is something that we discussed a bit recently in Anti-Racist theater when it comes to racial identities and their inclusion in the social “whiteness” in the discussion of race; there are groups that often start out as their own individual identities that are specifically outcasted from the “normal people”, that in some cases eventually are cast into the “normal” identity, and those that outline it will find social grievances that try to prevent their success in modern society. When it comes to LGBTQ success, especially trans success, it will be a long time before these identities will be accepted because of the social stigma created around these identities thanks to modern politicians and their villainization of these identities.
