When Languages Fall Apart: InlanDimensions International Arts Festival
The Theatre Times: Looking at the titles in the InlanDimensions theater lineup, I was hard put to find a common denominator. The archive works and the latest Japanese and Hong Kong shows featured at the festival were a medley of contemporary East Asian theater. They did share a commonality though. And while it’s hard to say whether it was intentional or not, one thing is certain: the themes of the limits of understanding and humanity tackled during the festival seem more than relevant now.

Each of these pieces seem absolutely incredible and geniu. They all explore this topic of communication which we find so essential as human beings. The one spoken in a multitude of languages is an incredibly fascinating concept. I think that difference in language is one of the most interesting human concepts, because we are all referring to the same thing but just making radically different sounds to express that thing. It is also interesting because it is often said that art is the universal language, but theatre is so reliant on words and language that sometimes it is very near impossible to make it a universal, equally experienced piece. The exploration of what it means to be a human being is also a fascinating thread of all the pieces mentioned. It raises questions like if people are defined as being a spirit or their ability to be understood by others or their impact on other people, the list just goes on. This festival seems like it is bringing incredibly important works to the people.
