Theater-Kid TikTok Is Loving New Musical Social-Media Trend

Rolling Stone: No one — not a dictator, not a politician, not a celebrity, not an influencer — is in possession of more power than a high school theater director. For a small community of theater kids, the director is the one person whose approval you crave most in the world, above their parents, friends, and even above God.

This is so funny. In fact, as an avid TikTok user and as someone who falls under the “theater kid” demographic, I’m surprised this has yet to enter my For You Page. But anyhow, it’s so nice to see high school theaters just out and about, trying to get people excited again about performing live in front of an audience. After last year’s zoom theater adventures, I was worried much of the culture would die out, parts left behind through the passage of time. That is partly true. I’m 75% sure my high school’s drama club is dead, or at the very least devoid of any of the traditions and charm it once had due to the pandemic and very messy hiring practices. But I also know that many of the people who were/are involved are also staying with it. Either through college clubs or pursuing a theater or arts degree, in a way, they are keeping that same energy going.

I don't know man, what's not to love about the fear and excitement and possibility of the next year's musical. Don't you remember in high school when everyone kept spreading rumors about what the show would be or why? Or how people would seem to be cooler because they thought they had an in with the drama teacher? As if that makes you cool in any sense of the word? Also yeah that's another point, when did being a theatre kid in high school become cool? And why wasn't it cool when shows like Glee or movies like High School Musical came out, but now that tiktok is a thing people love content like High School Musical the Musical the Series? HOW DOES THAT MAKE ANY SENSE? And like, why is the content on tiktok about high school theatre so accurate and cringey but simultaneously has so much engagement? How?!
