Bayonne Planning Board approves 1888 Studios at former Texaco site
Hudson Reporter: The Bayonne Planning Board has approved a major motion picture studio at the southern tip of the city. The movie studio, 1888, named after the year the motion picture camera was invented by Thomas Edison, will give a facelift to a long-vacant site.
This is a really interesting project that caught my eye since it will be the largest ground up movie studio ever developed in North America and it’s on the East Coast. From what I’m hearing, I’m excited about how developers are going about entering this community. Rather than kick people out and tear down in use buildings, 1888 Studios is revamping a long-vacant Texaco site. Additionally, they are making it a priority to create recreational areas with the city such as community parks and a waterfront walkway. I’m glad they also stressed that they will listen to the people living there to hear what they want from these spaces. The company will also partner with the people in the local school district to create an apprenticeship program. This is great because it sets a bar for how companies should enter a community which is with respect and emphasis on listening.
