Having worked in climate advocacy movements, the biggest question is always how to hold large companies and corporations accountable, especially if the entity attempting to hold it accountable is a non-profit organisation or a non-binding agreement like the Paris Agreement. This article centres on CDP, a nonprofit that helps to track environmental impact of companies and uses a scale of A to F to grade companies on management and progress. There is a surprisingly large percentage of companies on the S&P 500 stock market index that participate. In 2021, CDP collected information from more than 13,000 companies, a 35% increase from 2020 and a 141% increase from 2015 when the Paris Agreement was signed. Disclosing scores and tracking progress gives interested investors and current stakeholders a look into the environmental impact of these companies. This is definitely a step in the right direction but hopefully, there will be increased consequences and accountability for companies who are "failing" in regards to their environmental impact.
