MetroStage gets a new venue called Venue

DC Metro Theater Arts: Alexandria’s only professional theater, MetroStage, will reopen its curtains at a brand-new venue, or Venue that is, one of the new, sleek, and chic residential condominium complexes being constructed in Old Town North.

I am really glad that MetroStage got a new space and new opportunities through the new space. Especially with the increased opportunity to make money through concessions sales and the like in this venue. My only possible qualm with the move is shallow and purely aesthetic. I think that the look of the large condo is pretty ugly. Other than that, however, I am thrilled for them to be able to make a more stable theatre environment for both the community as well as the people who work there. I know how stressful it can be to work in the theatre in a venue that was not designed for theatre in any sort of way and how that can make you feel unstable in your job prospects. I was surprised to hear that it was the only professional theater in Alexandria as that is a pretty upper class type of city.

This is so exciting! I feel this will be a great development for MetroStage to reopen with a brand new space and new environment for their patrons. However, as a company that markets themselves as a professional theatre company, setting up shop in a condominium seems a little underwhelming. That could just be me being facetious but on the other hand I think this cabaret / speakeasy style venue could be the style this company is going for. It would be a very cozy and intimate space. Just from the few images linked in the article, the productions look truly high quality and well put together. I hope to read more about this company, their developments, and their future productions and how they are viewed by the surrounding areas. As someone who comes from a place where the theatre and arts scene were very prosperous, it’s crazy to think that somewhere would only have one professional theatre company, however I think this may have a domino effect on the community and introduce more opportunities for theatre.
