Moana Star Auli’i Cravalho Wants Disney to ‘Step Up’ on Don’t Say Gay
IndieWire: She may be known as the voice of “Moana,” but Auli’i Cravalho has a powerful voice of her own. The actress will soon star opposite Rowan Blanchard as an unassuming skater tomboy in “Crush,” an adorable queer teen rom-com coming out on Hulu next week.

t must be such an interesting position to be in as an artist to have to deal with organizations that go directly against your beliefs to make a living. It has always been so strange to me how large corporations can spend money and time on what is essentially an ad campaign for human rights and turn around and allow for injustice to happen on their front lawns. This is especially evident when the individuals working in those corporations feel the impact of that injustice personally. Auli’i Cravalho is forced into that position right now as a queer woman who also serves as a huge money-maker for Disney with her starring in Moana and the upcoming Crush. She is forced to deal with Disney’s tepid response to Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” law. “Representation is important. And I truly believe that putting your money where your mouth is important as well. And to speak directly about the Disney of it all, to have the individuals stand up against a corporation is what needed to happen, unfortunately.” I hope that the queer community can rise up and resist fascist laws like this that threaten our safety and existance.
