As someone on the student-led search committee, I am thrilled to hear it’s Robert Ramirez who’s been named head of Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Drama. As the article points out, his work back at UT Austin focused on DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) issues. He managed to insist on five full-time BIPOC professors on tenure within only two years. Impressive especially considering the industry's general whiteness and, thus, principles of white supremacy by which we abide. Not only that but reading about his successful fight to institute a full-time intimacy director at UT Austin is only more reassuring. I am so excited to see where Robert’s vision leads us as an institution. And even more excited to see how his work dismantling inherently oppressive structures will be carried by students as they join the workforce and trickle down to other academic institutions that look up to Carnegie Mellon University.
