WITHOUT WALLS 2022 — FESTIVAL DIARY

by Noah J Nelson | Apr, 2022 | No Proscenium: La Jolla Playhouse’s now annual celebration of site-responsive, interactive theatre and public performance returned to full strength this past week at San Diego’s ARTS DISTRICT Liberty Station for four days and nights of work ranging from theatrical games for kids to meditations on identity staged inside functioning pop-up bars.

I was really excited to learn about this festival. From acts that are truly immersive like the ant experience to acts that are spatially immersive like the Box Show, it seems like this festival would be an amazing thing to go see. I disagree with the critic, though - they harped on the idea that a play about a box couldn't really fit the theme of "Without Walls." What the critic is missing is that boxes always have six sides. So, the very act of the actress sitting inside a box that only has 5 sides already removes one wall. Plus, the walls are even further broken down as she opens and closes the various sides of the box to create new scenes. Meanwhile, walls are stagnant, and keep us from seeing what is truly going on inside. As such, I don't think it's fair to say that the box show clashes against the theme. The title, maybe, but the actual performance does not.
