The Lab announces The Gathering, a four-day free theater festival at GU
DC Metro Theater Arts: The Laboratory for Global Performance & Politics (The Lab) will present the return of The Gathering, a four-day theater festival on Georgetown University’s campus Wednesday, May 4, through Saturday, May 7, 2022. As part of The Lab’s mission to humanize politics through performance, this year’s festival will gather over 400 leading artists, thought-leaders, policymakers, activists, scholars, and the next generation of change-makers both in-person and virtually from 40 different countries.

This is a super interesting development and idea that I truly had never thought about before reading this article. I think opening the grounds for multi-level discussion through performance is actually something that could be very effective and done more often. With such a wide variety of topics and themes of performance at The Gathering there truly is something for everyone. I do appreciate how this festival is not closed off to specifically people who have a history of production or theatre making, but rather a wide variety of people with a meaningful story to tell. But when these topics are placed into the medium of a performance I think the message could be much better perceived and the discussions much more meaningful than say a lecture on these topics. Especially with the dealing of more dense topics or possibly sensitive topics for some people, performance truly can touch the hearts of many and make the community at this university more unified, hopefully.
