Given all the success that female-group musicals have had in the past, I'm actually surprised that no one put up a Suffragette musical up sooner. I'm thinking specifically of the musical Six, but there have plenty of other female-groups that lead musicals: Mean Girls, Heathers, and even Legally Blonde, to an extent. However, it's interesting to see that for this musical, the tone is more alike to Hamilton than it is to Six. According to the critics, they almost talked too much about the different policies and events that they worked on during their day. I was particularly interested in one critic's comment that it felt like they should've gone into the women's relationship to each other more. I think that's what made Hamilton, and to some degree Six, as well, such strong musicals. The audience wants to see what the group does together almost as much as how the group works and feels together, it seems like. In any case, the critics themselves even vary wildly, with some saying it's great and some saying it's not worth our time. I hope Suffs will get another edit like they talked about, and hopefully make its way into becoming a new Hamilton.
