Lead actress in Arena Stage's fall run of “Toni Stone” says she felt unsafe onstage

The Washington Post: Arena Stage had big ambitions for its fall 2021 run of “Toni Stone,” a fact-based play about the first woman to play full-time professional baseball in the Negro Leagues. Directed by Tony winner Pam MacKinnon, the production marked Arena’s return to indoor, in-person theater 18 months into the pandemic. And there were even plans to simulcast a live performance to thousands of fans at Nationals Park on Sept. 26.

No woman should ever be made to feel unsafe, especially in a moment planned to go one way and end up going another. It's like in a fight scene where someone unexpectedly throws a right hook at your jaw and you end up with a bruise on your face. If it was an accident or if there was any kind of miscommunication that would be one thing. But they brought in an intimacy coordinator for a reason. It's to protect the performers and make sure that everyone involved knows what to expect at every instant in the moment so this kind of shit doesn't happen. And for the company to twist this kind of incident like that is in such poor taste. You're really going to cover this up in the worst way too, like you're just going to cancel the show rather than like fire that actor from his job? Or just close the show, recast, and try again?
