“Jesus Christ Superstar” showcases PMT’s bid to become Pittsburgh’s off-Broadway destination
onStage Pittsburgh: Ken Gargaro makes the bold statement that Jesus Christ Superstar in the West End will “inaugurate a new chapter in the history of Pittsburgh Musical Theater.”
His own relationship with the show goes back nearly four decades, including the first full season of Gargaro Productions, now PMT. The company’s founder staged his own adaptation of the Webber-Rice musical at the Fulton Theater, soon to be the Byham, in 1992.

The sheer volume of talent in Pittsburgh is so impressive to me. Yes, arts were pretty big in my hometown Sarasota, Florida. However, it hardly compares there to Pittsburgh. I am enamored by the number of events that happen on a regular basis in the city. I have seen productions at the Byham, but never a Pittsburgh Music Theatre show there. First semester, I worked with the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. So of course I knew Pittsburgh Music Theatre existed, but I had never even heard of the Gargaro theatre prior to reading this article. I think this just goes to show that there is always more to discover in Pittsburgh Arts. I am really fascinated by the mission of the company. I am really interested in their production of Jesus Christ Superstar and hope to see it before it closes. I think the show is pretty overdone, but this iteration feels fresh. I hope my expectation is correct!
