I think this is a great idea, especially during April (Earth Month). Theatre is an industry that generates a large amount of waste. I use to be very involved with the Broadway Green Alliance, and actually started a chapter at my high school to challenge our use of paper. Trust me..I am as excited as anyone else (maybe even a little more so), when I see new entertainment technologies released. However, I can not help but think about the technology that is wasted in the advent of new cutting edge devices. Today, it is rather common for theatres to dispose large volumes of conventional par can fixtures. Personally, I will never forget a local performer who sold 50 America DJ Pars for $35. No one bought them, they eventually ended up in the dump. I think it is very important that as artists we are conscious of our own waste, and hopefully the industry adapts to create more technologies that can be updated as opposed to replaced entirely.
Since the entertainment industry is so large, if one little change is made to be more sustainable, it could have a significant impact. The concept of “roadway lighting to protect wildlife” is an interesting take on sustainable lighting because improper lighting can lead to a significant toll on humans and animals alike. This can also impact the theatre industry because, especially due to covid, it is more common to see performances outdoors, which can then have the same concerns lighting wise. I find the topic of light and human health to be interesting as well because the safety of everyone should always be a top priority especially for those working in the entertainment industry who are exposed frequently to lights that could be damaging. In the long run, these topics should all be taken into consideration and implemented as soon as possible so we know our industry is making a positive impact all around.
