Cast of Waitress Non-Equity National Tour Moves Towards Unionizing

First of all, congratulations to the Waitress tour for their push towards unionizing! Unions are vital in this industry to protect from the long history of labor exploitation that has historically happened in entertainment. I already thought that doing a union tour and non-union tour concurrently was weird enough, but it shocked me even more to find out that the non-union workers are making a third of what their union colleagues make and are lacking in many safety precautions. I think this case highlights how important it is for theatre workers to unionize everywhere, because this exploitation is ridiculous. We see time and time again that without a union or other legal protections, producers will do whatever they can to exploit their workers by cutting wages and reducing safety precautions, and these cuts can be quite dangerous to the health and safety of cast and crew. Especially now with the pandemic, we have to prioritize our safety by standing up for ourselves.
