Broadway Shows Canceling Performances — Again — As NYC Covid Cases Rise

www.forbes.com: At least two Broadway shows have canceled performances this week due to Covid-19 cases within the cast—and others are playing with understudies in major roles—with transmission beginning to rise again in New York City as the highly transmissible omicron BA.2 subvariant spreads.

It is more than upsetting to read about shows cancelling on Broadway. The article mentions several shows having understudies as the leads have tested positive. With the high transmission rate of the new Omicron variant, everyone working on shows are at high risk of being exposed, especially with the number of the crowd going in and out of theatres each day. It seems like the mask mandate and vaccination proof protocol have been extended to the end of this month, which hopefully lowers the chance of transmission. The article also mentions that many shows are eager to open now, hoping to be just in time for the Tony Awards, and I can totally understand why. Though I hope that the management team of shows can take extra precautions to ensure the health and safety of their cast and crew. I also wonder how many companies are forced to cancel the production altogether due to the high number of cases within the company. I imagine some smaller companies may not have understudies or enough staff on standby and will need to cancel the production as a result.
