PPG’s Fall dance preview: What to see in person by 10 Pittsburgh-based arts groups
onStage Pittsburgh: Several Pittsburgh-based arts organizations will return in the coming months to the theater for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic began. For audiences, that means a robust fall for dance.
But the pandemic isn’t over yet. For the latest safety measures, check each company’s website for updates. Some groups also plan to continue online options through at least the end of the year for those who aren’t quite ready yet to be part of an in-person audience.

I come from Los Angeles, which has a huge arts culture. During my high school years, I actively made an effort to immerse myself in the theatre culture in my surrounding area. At first I mainly saw commercial theatre, but started visiting smaller venues to see productions too. Moving to Pittsburgh, I was incredibly excited to explore all new locations for performance, but was also lost in how to start the process of finding them. So, this list is perfect! What I most appreciate about this list is the variety in professionalism of the art provided. There are more upscale ballet companies mentioned, and more trendy smaller theatre groups. The list did seem to be a bit ballet heavy, so I would have wished to see more theatre companies, as I am more interested in seeing productions of that genre. I am committed to exploring the Pittsburgh art scene, and will start my journey with this list!
I have never been overly invested in dance as an art form. It just hasn’t piqued my interest in any substantial way. I find it beautiful and those who are able to do it well are unbelievably talented but it has just never spoken to me. However, I will say that it is incredibly interesting and commendable that there are so many dance troupes all around Pittsburgh and with such wide ranging specialties. One could go to see a ballet and then a day later go down two streets and see experimental hip-hop. Pittsburgh astounds me with the sheer number of arts opportunities that reside inside its heart. Being from much more rural or at least small town kinds of areas, the sheer variety of everything the city has to offer is astounding. The diversity in the city is reflected in the diversity in the art. It has always been a working city but never one dismissive of the arts.
