onStage Pittsburgh: Directed by Quantum Theatre’s Founding Artistic Director Karla Boos and featuring Art Direction by Susan Tsu, the original 2020 cast and crew finally join for this examination of capitalism and culture, journalism, and censorship, which takes a point of departure from the Tiananmen Square massacre in Beijing, 1989.

First of all, gotta start this comment with big props to Susan Tsu, she’s given my class some insights to her thought process around this production and she’s just a genius.
I appreciate the acknowledgement that this play is mostly centered around a Western viewpoint, because that’s really important to recognize when doing shows about other cultures. With that said, I think this is a very interesting lens of analysis around the Tiananmen Square massacre, especially because it goes between time periods and involves equally both Asian and White actors. I think Tsu’s experiences of being at a conference in China during these protests will provide a much needed lens that most American designers wouldn’t have, especially being first-generation Chinese-American. She is the embodiment of both cultures that are being represented, and I believe that designers do some of their best work when they are able to draw on their own lived experiences. I’ll be sure to make an effort to see it!
