IATSE Making “Progress” At Bargaining Table To Avert Strike, Deal “Not There Yet”

Deadline: IATSE and the AMPTP are making progress at the bargaining table, but the two sides still have a ways to go to avert a threatened strike on Monday. “We did make progress,” a union source said. “Yesterday was a pretty good day, but we’re not there yet, by any means.”

While I do really hope they reach agreements before a strike has to occur, we're already at Friday the 15th so IATSE workers everywhere are packing up their things and returning home ready to fight for their rights on Monday. It's saddening but not surprising that there's still pushback from the AMPTP. What's being asked for is nowhere near unreasonable and if the people bargaining for the AMPTP had worked these jobs in these conditions, they wouldn't be resistant to making big change. Exploitation of labor has always been a big issue in our industry and it's exciting to see progress being made and people taking a stand in such large numbers against these policies. A few years back I visited London in the middle of a Tube workers strike and boy let me tell you, it was hard to get around. We oftentimes don't appreciate the work people do until they stop doing it. I hope that people don't rush in to scab for those companies that are being picketed. Those on strike are working towards the scabs' rights to proper working conditions as well and jeopardizing that for a paycheck is so self-centered and potentially detrimental to not only the effort but themselves.
