New Hazlett Theatre will be highlighting five local artists and creatives from Pittsburgh in its ninth season of Community Supported Art. I am especially excited for the works Lavender Terrace, Disassembly, and Papa. Lavender Terrace is a multimedia performance presented by Director and playwright NaTasha Thompson, dedicated to telling the story of marginalized and oppressed people fighting for the right to live full and fulfilling lives. Disassembly is a concert presented by Feralcat, including cutscenes from his original pixel art based video game and the piece as a whole explores race, oppression, nostalgia, and love, in a world where authoritarian censorship threatens censorship. Papa is an original play by Bailey Lee tells the story of her grandfather’s experiences immigrating from China to McKeesport, exploring three generations of Asian Americans and their complicated relationships in her familial hometown. All the works within New Hazlett’s seasons touch on very important themes and New Hazlett yields space to artists within the community to share these themes and strengthen those community bonds.
