One Perspective on IATSE's New Contract

Larchmont Buzz - Hancock Park News: Many in Hollywood are breathing a sigh of relief that the strike no one wanted has been averted. But there’s still plenty of concern that the IATSE negotiators may not have won enough concessions to suit the nearly 60,000 members of the union, now looking over the fine points of the deal. Members are expected to vote on the contract over the next three to four weeks.

This article brings up 2 unique perspectives on the IATSE contract that has been negotiated. First, there is an acknowledgement that what was negotiated is not enough. Some of the wins include more pension and healthcare money, some member salary increases to 20 dollars an hour, and a minimum 10-hour turnaround. These all sound good, theoretically. However, a 10 hour turnaround means that workers finish working at 9PM and have to be at work at 6AM, which is still not humane in the eyes of most workers. Also, while more money was won for healthcare and pensions, the amount won is still seen as not enough compensation. For a union that has some of the most labor power in America, there’s disgruntlement that more could not be won from the film industry. If the contract is not ratified by union members, there’s concern brought up in this article that producers will walk away from the negotiations all together. Personally, I would let them. There hasn’t been an industry-wide IATSE strike for a long time, and actually striking would show the producers that they mean business. It might be the only way to really win big here.
