Even though I've already written a comment about this incident, I chose to read this article because I want more clarity on the details. It seems like it's still unconfirmed if the gun had merely blanks or actual bullets, but it's also confirmed that blanks can do serious harm. So regardless--we must take this incredibly seriously. With all the movie-making technology, I'm surprised we cannot find a more effective solution that using a gun that may-or-may-not-accidentally-have-a-bullet-but-probably-not. The few times I've worked with a prop gun in theatre, it's been opened and shown to the actor by the ASM to reveal a lack of bullets. Granted, it was never fired during the show (it was a simple accessory), but that only strengthens the point that it's got to be dealt with super meticulously. As we've spoken about in SM seminar, we should have a checklist of standard procedures on how to prep, utilize, and store a firearm, and each person on set should be aware of it.
