Friday Essay: A World of Pain – Australian Theatre in Crisis

The Theatre Times: Australia’s performing arts sector has long been recognized as an ecosystem. It is a community of artists, arts organizations and institutions, all affected by factors such as education and training, audiences, policy and revenues. It comprises commercial organizations; not-for-profit, government subsidized companies; independent grassroots ventures; and amateur groups making and touring creative works for audiences locally, nationally and internationally.

This article was kind of polarizing. As America, is beginning to return to normalcy, many other countries are not. I had not realized the consequences children’s creativity would face as a result of COVID. In the formative years of childhood, many kids are missing out on exposure to theatre, of course I knew that. However, I had not really stopped to think about the way that will impact the industry or demand for theatre in twenty years from now. A few summers ago, I worked with an international festival. I formed a particularly close bond to the group from Australia. Their company was vibrant and worked predominately in devised work. They did one piece where the actors were painted monochrome and described crossing on to the afterlife silently. I can’t help, but wonder what will happen to them and all of the smaller theatre companies in Australia. As the article says, things like “Come From Away” and “Hamilton” will bounce back, but what about everything else?
