Who Was Halyna Hutchins, the ‘Rockstar Cinematographer’ Killed at 43 by a Prop Gun on ‘Rust’ Set?
www.thewrap.com: Halyna Hutchins, the award-winning cinematographer killed Thursday when actor-producer Alec Baldwin discharged a prop gun on the New Mexico set of the indie Western film “Rust,” was a 43-year-old “rockstar cinematographer” and rising star in the industry.

There has been a ton of news coverage around this incident in the past couple days, and most of what I’ve seen is headlines like “Alec Baldwin kills DP”. Nothing about Halyna Hutchins besides her name as a victim. I’ve seen lots of social media responses that “it wasn’t his fault” and that “he’ll be traumatized forever”. While true, I’m sure it is even more traumatizing for her surviving husband and child. When this industry has major accidents like this, and accidents will continue to happen, we have to provide more support to the victims rather than the producers. Halyna Hutchins lost her life 2 days ago, a brilliant artist who had so much ahead of her. There must be a commitment to make sure that these accidents do not happen, because no one deserves to lose their life on a film set. This tragedy has real human cost, and we must express support for the victim and remember her life instead of casting her away as just the “DP”.
This is the second article I am reading on Hutchins, and it is by far the better. It explains who she was, focuses on her career, explains what happened, and does not claim an explanation for the motive behind the discharge of the gun. It definitely is more biased towards the idea of “something more than an accident” as the tweets are biased towards that. But I think I am biased towards that as well considering two people killed/injured by a prop gun? That seems like rather a lot. I think the word choice of the tweets included in the article is interesting: “sick,” “horrible,” “infuriated.” I wonder how it would be different if she wasn’t such a large name or rising star. Again I think this ties in to crew visibility and iastories This article also makes me wonder what characterizes a rising star as quite honestly I haven’t seen the movies she made.
