Nautical pavilion promotes sustainability in Dubai
newatlas.com: Dubai's Expo 2020 event recently kicked off and Carlo Ratti Associatti (CRA) and Italo Rota have designed and installed a pavilion to represent Italy. Hoping to produce a temporary structure that wouldn't eventually end up in landfill, the team used a wide range of recycled and recyclable materials to promote sustainable building practices, including upturned boats, rope made from millions of recycled bottles, and even old orange peel.

This is an incredible feat of sustainability. I love the creativity in using things like orange peels, coffee grinds, and recycled water bottles, to build this whole Italian Pavilion at the Expo Dubai. Things like this need to be way more widespread around the world. I wish it were more accessible to use materials like this in some practical way, but I think we are seeing this be more and more accessible as time goes on. Companies are making ways to turn these materials into more usable building resources which enables this sustainability to be more widespread. The design of this pavilion is really amazing to look at. I love the nautical rope being used as a facade of the structure. The whole nautical theme was really achieved very well. I hope more sustainable building will happen in our industry specifically because there is currently so much waste in what we do. I think as time goes on and people change their ways and open themselves to new ideas, this will be much more present in our industry.
