“The Gun Show (Can We Talk About This?)” Sparks Dialogue on Gun Control

Pittsburgh in the Round: Anton Chekhov’s advice to playwrights – “If in the first act you have hung a pistol on the wall, then in the following one it should be fired. Otherwise don’t put it there” – finds its real-life counterpart in playwright E.M. Lewis’ short work, The Gun Show (Can we talk about this?) playing at Quantum Theatre through March 3.

I would really like to see this show. I think the conversations around gun control have gotten all too much just pointing fingers and telling other people they are wrong, which is not an effective way to get any progress made. I think this play sounds like it takes a step back just showing the story of one person’s experience with guns and how each of those experiences has changed this one person’s view on guns if they have at all. I think this is a much more effective way to provoke conversation between people because I think people can see how these experiences with guns have changed a person, and maybe they could become more emphatic to the idea that guns can have these drastic effects on people’s lives. Or maybe they will see a scene and think about they have reacted differently to the same situation or how they might have if put in a similar situation. Whatever dialogue is being had by audience members after watching this show, I think will be a productive dialogue.
